There are two legends about the origin of the tradition of eating mooncakes. One is a mythological story from the Tang Dynasty, which tells that the earth was surrounded by 10 suns at that time. One day, all 10 suns appeared in the sky simultaneously, and the intense heat almost scorched the earth. Fortunately, a skilled archer named Hou Yi shot down 9 suns, saving the earth. To reward him, the Queen Mother of the West gave Hou Yi an elixir of immortality, but she warned him to use it properly.
