both意為one and the other（一個和另一個，兩者都）。它后面跟動詞的復數形式。both可單獨用，后面也可跟名詞：Both（doors）were open．兩個（門）都開著。或后面跟（of）+the/these/those或所有格形式：both（of）the wheels兩個車輪都both（of）your wheels你的兩個車輪都或后面跟of+us/you/them：Both of us knew him．大家兩個都認識他。人稱代詞+both也是可以的：We both knew him．（譯文同上。）（參見第48節。）bothand可以用于強調兩個形容詞、名詞、動詞等的組合：It was both cold and wet．又寒冷又潮濕。He is both an actor and a director．他既是演員又是導演。He both acts and directs．他又做演員，又當導演。
