一直關注生態問題和可持續進步的大眾汽車公司在中國拓展節能環保研究的投入方面再出重拳：2004年十月12日，大眾汽車公司與同濟大學與德國IAV公司在上海一同簽署了合作備忘錄，將在燃料電池汽車技術方面拓展合作研究。同期在上海舉行的2004必比登挑戰賽上，一款環保型定義車吸引了很多喜愛。
