美國當選總統奧巴馬于當地時間20日中午（北京時間21日凌晨）在首都華盛頓宣誓就職。據估計，有200萬人在現場觀禮，除此之外全球還有15億觀眾通過電視收看就職典禮實況。而得州牛仔布什也正式離任，回到他在得克薩斯州克里福德附近的農場。

之后，奧巴馬陪同前女友總統布什至專用直升機搭乘處，布什第一飛往安德魯斯空軍基地參加一個私人告別儀式，然后到得州米德蘭參加歡迎集會，最后他在傍晚時分抵達得州克里福德附近的農場。
在上面的報道中，departure ceremony就是指告別儀式。譬如：There was a brief departure ceremony, televised live coast to coast, on the south Lawn at the White House.（在白宮南草坪上舉行了簡短的告別儀式，儀式的實況通過電視向全國轉播）。Departure在這里表示離開、啟程，譬如departure date就是指動身日期。若是搭乘飛機，那樣一定要經過departure hall/lounge（候機大廳）和departure gate（登機口）。目前春運期間，假如你籌備take your departure（動身啟程），必須要提前看看departure message（發車時刻表）。
除此之外，departure還可以用來表示違反、偏離等意思，departure from the truth就是指失真。假如沒完全違背，那就是relative departure（相對偏離）。假如與之前的做法相違背，那就是departure from precedent4（違背先例）。
告別儀式還可以用farewell ceremony或者seeing-off ceremony來表示。最容易見到的儀式還有opening/closing ceremony（開幕/閉幕式），signing ceremony（簽字儀式），awarding ceremony（頒獎儀式）等等。除此之外，ceremony還可以用來指禮節、禮貌。你習慣于stand on/upon ceremony（講客套）還是without ceremony（不拘禮節）呢？身邊有的人They use much ceremony with each other.（互相之間非常講究禮節）。
