1、關于if it be a fault的使用方法。

曹老師主要講了三點：

1. 古英語的遺留。

2. 現代英語，只有很正式的文體才用，比如法律條文，合同，法典中。

3. 在現代英語的一般交際中，用 if it is a fault， 代替 if it be a fault。

這三點我基本贊同。但，在現代英語的一般交際中，有時也見到這種表達，而且就在一般英語的會話中。所以，我覺得，這種使用方法另有新意。 最直接的理解是，if it be a fault 是 if it should be a fault 的省略說法。可以看作是虛擬語氣的一種表達形式，是對所述狀況不確定的一種假設。if it be a fault, 翻譯為 “假設它是個錯誤的話”，暗示說話人并不覺得是個錯誤，如此說是為了婉轉和留有空間。又如：

Are you planning to sell the house, and if this be so, how much do you want?

句子意思是：“你計劃賣掉房屋嗎？如果是如此的話，你開價多少呢？”

這句話表示：說話人對售房者“是不是賣掉房屋不確定”，因此說話留有空間，讓他們不覺唐突。

其實，在美國英語中，這種虛擬使用方法常常見到。又如：

If it be right, do it boldly. 倘若感覺是對的，就大膽地去做

If this be the case, he deserves you. 當真如此的話，他的確配得上你。

Leave out my name from the gift if it be a burden, but keep my song. 倘若我的名字成了負累，就將它從這禮物上拭去吧，但請保留我的詩歌。

If this be the price of the childs sympathy, I cannot pay it. 假如這是換取孩子同情的代價，我是不可以支付的。
