A number of factors, including a declining birth rate, difficulties in obtaining quality education, and easier access to overseas universities, have combined to drain the student pool of Chinese universities.

文中的student pool指的是高考考試生源，pool在這里是備用職員的統稱，譬如pool of applicants（面試人才庫）、male/female pool（男/女孩源）。Pool還常用來指共用的資源或資金，譬如gene pool（基因庫）、forex reserve pool（外匯儲備庫）、talent pool（人才庫）等等。

National college entrance exam 曾被描述為千軍萬馬擠獨木橋。為了使更多人同意到大學教育，數年前，大學曾掀起一股scale expansion（擴招）熱潮。而現在，讀大學的道路好像已經變成一座立交橋。不少高中增設出國班，還有的則通過NCEE migrant（高考考試移民）更順利地拿到key universities（重點大學）的錄取公告書。北大等高校已經開始實行nominations from their headmasters（校長推薦制）與independent recruitment （自主招生），這類都是對國內現在高考考試規范的有益嘗試。
