上世紀80年代之前生的人大多數都要歷程過一件衣服兩代穿，貴重家什代代傳的時期，英文里這個傳下來的舊衣服叫做hand-me-down。到了經濟進步的今天，估計沒幾個青年會想穿父母或哥哥姐姐的舊衣服。目前的青年衣物更新換代頻繁，而上一輩人都不忍看著好好的東西被遺棄，于是就出現了與hand-me-down完全相反的物品繼承模式，也就是由下傳上，即hand-me-up。

Hand-me-up is a used object, especially an article of clothing, passed from a younger person to an older person.

Hand-me-up 就是年輕一代用過的然后傳給比自己年長的一代人繼續用的物品，多指衣物。

Younger kids know the pain of hand-me-downs, the clothes they inherit from bigger siblings^{1. Sleeves hang below the wrists, pants slide around the hips2 and style seems like the magazine selection in a waiting room outdated3.}

家面小一點的孩子都了解從哥哥姐姐那里接衣服穿的煩惱。衣袖蓋過手腕、褲腰繞著屁股打轉、款式與候車室的過期雜志是同伴。

But some families put a twist on the trend. Instead of hand-me-downs, they share hand-me-ups. Older offspring who tire of wearing the same old threads pass garments to their parents, who might not be as picky about fit or fashion.

但有的家庭扭轉了這個趨勢。在他們那里沒有由上傳下，而變為由下傳上。年長的子女會把不想穿的衣物給他們的爸爸媽媽，由于爸爸媽媽可能不會對尺寸和樣式太挑剔。
