上面報道中的reserve astronaut就是航天員候選人，reserve在這兒意為儲備的、備用的，比如：a reserve supply of food（食物供給儲備）。Reserve在金融術語中表示儲備金，如forex reserve pool（外匯儲備庫）；這個詞用在足球比賽中還可表示替補的，如reserve player（替補隊員）。

選拔航天員候選人十分嚴格，有body odor（體臭）、bad breath（口臭）、chronic sore throats（慢性咽炎）、ringworm（癬）, cavities（蛀牙）等普通疾病的都算不合格。另外，航天員候選人的家人也得出示證明其無contagious disease（傳染病）的clean bill of health（健康證明）。
